The 2013 season for the Wisconsin State Football League begins this weekend and the local entry, the Tri-City Bulldogs will play their opener Saturday at Dodge County. The Bulldogs will have a new look this season as the Milton Mayhem from the Spring League will join forces with the Bulldogs this season to fill out a roster of around 40 players when everyone is on board. Marvin Jones returns as an all-league player for the Bulldogs as a Baraboo resident and other top returnees from the immediate area include Steve and Zach Cicero, Paul Roberts, Drae Strompe and Zach Zamzow from the Wisconsin Dells area. Warner Park in Madison serves as the home field for the Bulldogs serving as halfway point between the players from our area and those in the Milton area. The home opener is August 10th. Rick Munch serves as Head Coach this seaason and is also handling many of the administrative duties for the Bulldogs progream.
The annual Wisconsin Football Coaches Association State high school football All-Star games are to be played on Saturday at Titan Stadium at UW-Oshkosh. The game involving players from small schools in divisions 4-7 is set for Noon with the Large schools game for players in divisions 1-3 at 5 PM. Defensive Lineman Ian Collins of Hillsboro will be one of the players on the South team in the small schools game along with RB Kris Manning of Necedah and Defensive Lineman Spencer Hall and Defensive Back Matt Kleinhans from SCC champion Nekoosa while John Benish, a long-time head coach at Wonewoc-Center and a current assistant on the Reedsburg staff, is one of the South assistant coaches this week. Outside Linebacker Dalton Kind, Offensive Lineman Jacob Ohnesorge and Defensive End Dean Helt from Badger North champion Waunakee will be on the South team in the large schools game along with Joel Cretney, Daylon Bowar and Brandon Cushman from Mount Horeb-Barneveld with Mount Horeb-Barneveld coach Travis Rohrer also the head coach for the South squad. Al proceeds from this week go to the Children’s Hospital Of Wisconsin.
It’s the final dual meet of the Tri-County Conference swim seaason for the Baraboo Riptide Saturday morning at Cross Plains, regarded as the top team in the conference this season. The Riptide has won three straight duals and sit at 4-2 for the conference season and all the teams in the conference look forward to the end of season conference meet next Saturday and Sunday at the Jack Young Middle School in Baraboo as hundreds of swimmers, parents and fans converge on the circus city.
Many special events are scheduled for the evening Saturday at Dells Raceway Park. The Late Model cars will engage in a 40-lap feature with the Sportsman, Pure Stock and Bandit cars also in action and there will be a Bandits challenge race along with the CSR Super Cup Cars. A Color Guard Flag Show will also be a part of the Saturday night card and the very unique School Bus Races are also part of the festivities. Fan gates open at 4 PM with qualifying at 5 PM and racing at 7 PM Saturday night.
