WIAA State Team Wrestling: Sauk-Prairie loses in the D-1 semi-finals 49-15 to unbeaten Kaukana at the UW Field House Saturday Morning. Sauk winners included Brandon Sprecher, Jared Schaaf, Caleb Sisbach and Eddie Smith but the Eagles finish 11-3 for the dual meet season in a year that Sauk qualified for the State Team Tournament for the first time and sent a school record six wrestlers to the State individual tournament. Wausau West edges Kaukana 28-27 for the D-1 title for the second time in school history.
Mauston reached the championship match in D-2 with a 34-25 win over Chilton-Hilbert but the SCC champs lost to 45-21 in the title match as Luxemberg-Casco wins their 11th State team title with Mauston finishing 13-2. Lancaster wins their first team title with a win in the final 38-21 over Coleman to take the D-3 championship.
Boys Basketball: For the second year in a row, Wisconsin Dells falls just short of the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament with a loss to Lodi as the Blue Devils win in the Sectional final in Middleton Saturday afternoon 73-59 in Division Three. Lodi lost in the regular season to Wisconsin Dells this year and last year but Lodi knocked off the Chiefs last year in the Sectional semi-finals and they win in the Sectional final this year. Dells led early 5-0 but Lodi displayed some impressive shooting for most of the day, building a 35-26 lead by halftime. Lodi put together an 11-0 run in the third period to go up 48-32 but the Chiefs came back strong to close to within five on two occasions in the final period before running out of gas down the stretch. Both teams shot over 50% for the game from the floor. Shane Wimann scored 17 points, MJ Delmore 15 and Mike Dickman 13 for the Chiefs who finish 24-2 for the season. Lodi heads to State in D-3 on Friday at 23-3 with Brady Moses and Jordan Shea scoring 17 each on Saturday.
Royall falls short in their quest for a second Boys State Basketball appearance in four years as they lose a D-5 Sectional final 49-44 to Elmwood Saturday afternoon at La Crosse Logan High School. Royall scored the game’s first eight points and led 15-10 after one quarter but Elmwood rallied to take a five-point halftime lead and they go on to win by five and are headed to State at 23-4 overall. Scenic Bluffs champion Royall ends their season with that same record of 23-4. Eric Frye scored 17 points for Royall. The D-5 State semi-finals are Thursday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison.
De Forest will not make a return trip to the Boys State Basketball Tournament in D-2 as the Norskies lost to Stoughton from Badger South 55-51 in Saturday’s Sectional final. De Forest ends their run at 16-10 overall while Stoughton heads to State Friday afternoon at 18-8 overall. Brett Minick scored 17 points for the Norskies.
Girls Basketball: D-2 Baraboo 61 Madison Edgewood 43-Baraboo improves to 21-3 for the season with perhaps their best performance of the year as they stop Edgewood’s 14-game win streak. Baraboo led for virtually the entire game as they took a nine-point lead by halftime and moved the advantage to double digits for much of the second half. Baraboo played with outstanding intensity throughout the game and got a very balanced night offensively with Sam Terry scoring 17 points with 14 rebounds, Emily Brinker scoring 14 and Baraboo also had six other players that scored on the night. Baraboo also was plus ten for the game in the rebounding department. Edgewood won at Baraboo during the regular season but Baraboo returns the favor at Edgewood with the Crusaders ending the season at 19-5 after 14 straight wins. Amanda Kelm scored 17 in the loss for Edgewood. Baraboo again advances to the Sectional semi-finals in Middleton at 7 PM on Thursday when they will face Badger South champion and state ranked Monona Grove at 22-2 as they knock off Waunakee on Saturday night 56-46.
D-3-Nekoosa avenges two regular season losses to the Lady Chiefs with a win in the Dells, 51-49 to earn a trip to the Sectionals next week. It was a close game all the way with Marissa Fernandez scoring 16 and Jaden Ward 14 in the loss for Wisconsin Dells who finishes 12-13 overall. Nekoosa moves on at 18-7 to face 11-14 Richland Center Thursday as the Hornets shock Adams Friday and then win by a 59-45 score at Westfield Saturday night. Thursday’s Sectional semi-final is at Baraboo High School at 7 PM.
D-5 Brookwood 41 Royall 38-Brookwood advances at 19-6 to Thursday’s Sectional semi-final at Richland Center against Seneca, the Ridge and Valley Conference champs. Royall, a league champion along with Brookwood, Hillsboro and Bangor in the Scenic Bluffs, ends the season 17-8.
