Boys Hockey: Baraboo-Portage faces the Grafton Coop at 12:30 PM at the Madison Ice Arena as part of the Culver’s Cup Tournament. Baraboo’s coop team is 4-2 overall and this will be their first game since a December 15th loss to Waunakee by a score of 5-3. Coach Jason Laux squad is allowing less than two goals per game so far with an offensive average of three plus goals per contest. The depth of the squad will be tested this week with games on three straight days in Madison and joining these two teams in the eight-school field are Lakeland, Mc Farland, Madison West, Madison Memorial, Monona Grove and Chicago St. Ignatius. Baraboo’s squad will play at 1 PM Friday with a win today or at 3:30 PM Friday should they lose this afternoon.
Reedsburg-Wisconsin Dells hosts the 2nd annual Monk’s Cheeseburger Classic which begins today and runs through Saturday at the Poppy Waterman Arena in Lake Delton. RWD is 6-3 going into the week after a December 18th win over Mc Farland with that victory snapping a three-game losing skid. RWD is scoring nearly five goals per game this season with seven goals scored or more three times and on defense, RWD is allowing three goals per game. RWD faces the Kenosha coop in their first game of the tournament at 7:30 PM tonight with other games featuring Viroqua vs Beaver Dam at Noon, Greendale vs West Salem at 2:30 PM and Beloit vs Waupun at 5 PM. Game times are the same Friday with winners bracket games at 2:30 and 7:30 PM and play begins Saturday at 10 AM.
Sauk-Prairie Coop at the Spooner Holiday Tournament-Sauk’s squad will face Baldwin-Woodville at 3 PM today in their first game of this eight-team, three-day tournament and they bring a five-game win streak into the week, going from 2-5 overall to 7-5 overall including a key 7-6 win over Waunakee Saturday that puts Sauk squarely in the Badger North title chase. Luke Mc Elhenie leads the Sauk group offensively and in fact leads the state with 23 goals scored and his 37 points for the season offensively are second best among the state’s high school players.
Girls Hockey: Badger Thunder Coop plays today, tomorrow and Saturday in the Culver’s Cup girls high school hockey holiday tournament with their first game today at 12:30 PM at Hartmeyer Ice Arena against Milwaukee University School. The Thunder is 2-6 overall although they have won two of their last three games with the Thunder 1-4 in conference play in the Badger. Offensive production has been a problem for the Thunder with about two and a half goals per game but 11 of the 21 goals scored came in one game against Viroqua although the Thunder has been strong on defense, allowing just over three goals per game and less than two per game allowed over the last five games. The other games today in the girls portion of this event feature Arrowhead vs Northland Pines at 3 PM, Metro Lynx Coop vs Point-Rapids at 5:30 PM with St Croix Valley vs Brookfield at 8 PM with all those games at Hartmeyer. The Thunder will play at 10:30 AM Friday should they win or 8 AM if they lose at MIA with Arrowhead or Northland Pines the opposition Friday.
Girls Basketball: Baraboo hosts two-day holiday event today and tomorrow with their first game at 6 PM tonight against Waterford. Baraboo is 5-0 overall and will be playing their first game since a December 18th win over Wisconsin Rapids with two games postponed at the end of last week. Sam Terry and Emily Brinker of Baraboo are two of the top three scorers in Badger North right now and Baraboo has given up 45 points or less in four of the five games en route to a number five D-2 State ranking in the coaches poll. The JV squads from these two schools also play at 4:30 PM today following the Reedsburg-Richland Center varsity contest at 3 PM. Reedsburg is 3-1 overall with back-to-back wins over Rapids and De Forest, giving up only 40 points total in those two wins. Reedsburg has struggled some on offense but they stand at 3-1 overall with Beth Maenpaa a consistent scorer for Reedsburg. Richland Center has not played quite at the level as recent seasons but the Hornets are still dangerous. Friday’s schedule at Baraboo High School shows Reedsburg vs Waterford at 1 PM and Baraboo vs Richland Center at 4 PM in varsity action.
Weston at the Pecatonica Tournament-Weston is 3-3 overall and will face Pecatonica at 7:30 PM tonight preceeded by Fall River vs River Ridge at 6 PM. Five of Weston’s six games have been decided by seven points or less and they have showed definite improvement from a year ago.
Hillsboro plays two games today at the Riverdale High School holiday tournament. Hillsboro is 3-2 overall with both losses coming in overtime in league play against New Lisbon and Royall. The Tigers started the season with three lopsided non-conference wins.
Royall High School hosts a one-day four-team tournament in Elroy with Royall vs Westby at 11 AM and Boscobel vs Brookwood at 1 PM in the first round matchups. Royall has started the year 3-1 overall including a league leading mark of 3-0 in the Scenic Bluffs. Kelly Switz scored 20 points for the Lady Panthers in a win at Bangor Friday. 4 PM and 5:45 PM are the game times today for the second round.
Boys Basketball: Sauk-Prairie opens play in the Barneveld holiday tournament today at 3 PM vs Belleville, The Sauk-Prairie Eagles are 4-4 overall with a three-game win streak ending in their December 18th loss at Reedsburg. Two of the four wins have been by two points or less and the other two were by comfortable margins with all four losses by double digit margins. Evansville and Barneveld also are in this tournament and will square off at 4:30 PM today with each team playing tomorrow as well.
Wrestling: Reedsburg at the 12-team Eau Claire Memorial Invite, Beavers are 1-2 in duals this season and this will be their fourth tournament, Sophomore Wyatt Rabuck has won two individual titles already for the Beavers in Reedsburg and at Richland Center. Action begins bright and early at 7 AM today.
